Bored by the Bible?

There are passages, chapters and even entire books of the Bible that are a challenge to read. But today, something clicked and now I’m excited to dig into the Scriptures that used to put me to sleep.

As I was listening to Day 43 of The Bible in a Year, Father Mike read from Exodus (or maybe it was Leviticus?) about how God’s people were to construct the Ark of the Covenant. I have no clue what a cubit is. And even if I did know, oh, my goodness – the details about every little dimension of this wooden box are overwhelming!!!

But then it hit me; God ALWAYS has a purpose! And that means these details MUST matter.

Maybe we will see heaven’s version of the Ark someday and wonder that God allowed us to build a piece of heaven right here on earth. Or maybe, in the time of trials, we will know what is true because a counterfeit won’t match up to these very specific details.

So, no – I still don’t know how or why these details matter to us. But I am excited to recognize that God revealed something to us which had been hidden from humankind. And how incredible that God revealed it in this level of detail?!

Which brings me to the other “boring” passages, chapters and even books of the Bible. They were boring, because I didn’t recognize they had a purpose for us; here today.

We can wonder together about why these details matter, but we now realize how precious they are to God – and how precious we are since God made them available to us.
